Mode of Transmission
Transmission is via large droplets during close contact with contaminated secretions or fomites. The virus can persist on environmental surfaces for hours and on hands if hands are not washed immediately. Studies have noted that many hospital personnel working on the pediatric wards during periods of community RSV outbreaks acquired RSV infection.

Infection among hospital personnel can occur by self-inoculation with contaminated patient secretions.

Incubation Period
The incubation period ranges from 2 to 8 days. However, 4 to 6 days is most common. The viral shedding is usually 3 to 8 days but it may be longer especially in young infants where shedding may continue for as long as 3 to 4 weeks.
