Inpatient Control Measures
Patient Transport
A patient colonized/infected with VRE should remain in their room as much as possible. The patient must adhere to the following precautions if it is necessary to leave the room. Prior to leaving the room, the patient should be wear a clean gown and wash his/her hands with an antimicrobial soap (e.g., chlorhexidine). The receiving unit must be notified in advance of the patient's VRE status. If the patient touches or uses equipment, the equipment should be cleaned with an EPA-approved disinfectant after use. Patients should refrain from touching any common surfaces (e.g., microwave) or from using common areas on the unit (e.g., kitchen, playroom) as well as the cafeteria/gift shop.

Once the patient has been placed on a stretcher or in a wheelchair, transport personnel should remove their gown and gloves in the patient's room and then wash their hands prior to moving the patient. Gowns and gloves should not be worn outside of the room during the routine transport of a VRE patient.
